Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing (SE™) is a body-oriented therapeutic model applied in multiple professions and professional settings—psychotherapy, medicine, coaching, teaching, and physical therapy—for healing trauma and other stress disorders. It is based on a multidisciplinary intersection of physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics and has been clinically applied for more than four decades. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine.

The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma. It offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states. SE provides effective skills appropriate to a variety of healing professions including mental health, medicine, physical and occupational therapies, bodywork, addiction treatment, first response, education, and others.

THE MIND | BODY | SPIRIT RESET

To re-discover our connection with our body, mind and spirit, we must move out of survival. Although humans possess the regulatory mechanisms (millions of years old) to regulate and neutralize the high levels of arousal associated with defensive survival behaviours, sometimes these systems are overridden by the rational mind and we can become stuck in time.

These amazing systems are in place to protect and keep us safe, however, depending on our past lived experiences, these survival mechanisms can perceive day-to-day stressors as the tiger raging toward us.

This can lead to chronic overload and a stuck state in these survival strategies.

Imagine your walking into your local coffee shop, and your threat response is locked in active mode, and unknowingly, this influences your thoughts, behaviours and actions.

It is time to move out of survival and into Connection

Somatic Experiencing® offers a gentle and slow approach that renegotiates with the autonomic nervous system, establishing a new felt experience of safety and connection.

Through curiosity, we can begin to discover the language of our nervous system, begin to co-create resiliency and expand our capacity to return to a connected state with ease and compassion.

This bottom-up approach connects to the innate wisdom of the body rediscovering the felt sense of the present moment.

Reclaiming our ability to self regulate liberates us from living a life as if danger is lurking around every corner and recover, enabling us to deal with stress and the like with flexibility, resiliency and connected.

my story............

Not long ago, I was experiencing a significant amount of inner chaos and suffering that seemed to loop throughout the days with little reprieve. The angst I was experiencing came in the form of extreme anxiety, where I felt debilitating pain in my chest. This anxiety left me feeling stuck from genuinely connecting with others, lost and out of touch between what I thought was true and what I was experiencing. 

My coping and survival were to isolate and hide from the world. Yet, the disconnect led to further shame and an incessant hostile inner critic that lived in my thoughts. 

My journey sent me on many different healing paths to learn how to understand myself better, what was happening, and why. At moments, I wanted to know how not to be me. I felt truly alone.

Today, I look back and am grateful for the fantastic teachers, guides, leaders and healers I have met and connected with along the way. Each has provided great wisdom and teachings that I bring to my work today.

What I began to discover and learn through Somatic Experiencing® and the felt sense approach has shifted how I made sense of my experience. 

Understanding of my internal operating system and how to support myself. 

Little did I know that my body was holding onto deep residual trauma. 

Little did I know or was even aware that I was in a constant state of survival.

The SE approach began to offer a way to connect to my inner sanctuary in a way that I had never experienced previously. The continuous tools and resources that I intentionally began to adopt into my day to day started to shift my state from the inside.

Creating a sense of safety and ease from the inside softened my inner critic and created a capacity to build up my emotional resiliency.
